Deutsche Herzzentrum München

Design standards for an accessible website

The German Heart Center Munich - a clinic at the Technical University of Munich - is a specialist clinic for cardiovascular diseases with around 1,200 employees and over 12,000 operations a year.

As an institution of the Free State of Bavaria, the German Heart Center Munich places great importance not only on future-proofing but also on a high standard of accessibility and the easy comprehensibility of complex medical content.

The challenge

We redesigned the entire website for the Deutsches Herzzentrum München (DHM) and made it fit for mobile use. We continue to support our client in optimizing the site by gradually introducing additional features.

Informing patients:

In addition to replacing the existing website, one of the challenges in redesigning the site was processing the huge amount of content - with the goal of presenting it as clearly and simply as possible for patients and relatives, while at the same time providing comprehensive information about clinical pictures and treatment options.

Representation & Employer Branding:

For the German Heart Center Munich, it is important to represent the core and specialist competencies of the hospital. This includes the presentation of individual physicians and research groups as well as their positions in the medical and scientific discourse.

Two workshops were held beforehand to ensure that all project requirements were met.

The first workshop was used to test assumptions and develop personas with the client. Input was also gathered for the first design basis.

In a second workshop, we presented the results of the first workshop and the design. Based on the feedback, the right form for the implementation was defined. After only one year, the new website was implemented.

Project features with best practice character.

❤️ A Heart for Donors

We created a special landing page for the German Heart Center Munich to collect donations. To make the donation experience more interactive and to encourage donors, we developed a logarithmically growing donation heart.

The donation mechanism is both simple and intuitive: the donation heart grows in proportion to the donation amount and pulsates when a donation exceeds €1,000. Donor information is securely transmitted over an encrypted SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Internet connection.

👍 Accessibility

The demand for accessibility is essential, especially in the medical environment. In the design, we have applied the Web Accessibility Guidelines and WCAG2.0 standards. Creating accessible websites means paying close attention to contrasts and font sizes, for example, and taking into account the perception of people with red-green or visual impairments.

📄 Glossary Function

In the case of demanding technical texts, such as medical patient information, users with different levels of knowledge need to be accommodated.

The glossary function supports this: hovering the mouse over a word provides a more detailed description of the word, similar to Wikipedia. An extension makes this possible. Each glossary entry has its own page, which can explain the term in detail.

A medical lighthouse project

Our work for the German Heart Center Munich is a model for the implementation of design standards in terms of accessibility, user experience and user engagement. Our project structure and approach supported a smooth project flow of this exciting WordPress website project.
